Biografie

In a 2016 interview, Markus Schulz recalled leaving the glitches in. While making “Travelling Light” on a train from Birmingham to London, his laptop could barely run the synth; buffering artefacts entered the recording, yet the track stayed on his 2005 debut album, Without You Near. The anecdote suits a producer whose trance has often favoured character and narrative over spotless uplift. Schulz described that album as a dark, personal journey, sequencing its tracks so they melted into one another rather than behaving like separate singles. His broader identity also grew from travel. Burned out after a long Arizona club residency, the German-born, Miami-based DJ spent two years on London’s Coldharbour Lane rebuilding his musical direction; the street later gave its name to Coldharbour Recordings. Through that label, his weekly Global DJ Broadcast and the deeper Dakota alias, Schulz has built a catalogue linking progressive house, trance and more shadowed club material. Even at arena scale, the details remain important: an imperfect synth, a remembered street, a set designed as a journey.
