About Marie Vaunt

Bio

Marie Vaunt puts acid at the centre of her musical identity: the restless sound of a 303-style bassline, a forceful kick and a vocal that can cut through a crowded room. Based in Los Angeles, the Japanese-American DJ and producer connects that music with an aesthetic shaped by her Japanese heritage. Tracks such as Kiss My Acid and That Acid helped her define the direction, while releases through Drumcode, HILOMATIK and Eli Brown’s Arcane have brought it into different corners of techno. Her own Kurai Records gives her another outlet for material she considers too dark or unconventional for other labels. Behind the sound is a hands-on, mobile working method. Vaunt has described starting tracks on a Behringer TD-3, letting the awkwardness of its sequencer suggest patterns she might not have written at a keyboard. She also works on a laptop and headphones while travelling, carrying ideas from hotel rooms back into the studio. That combination of tactile acid programming and practical, on-the-road production is an important part of how her music takes shape.
