Bio
Sustance combines the weight of underground drum and bass with a taste for soulful melody, detailed sound design and MC-led tracks. The Bristol-based producer and DJ, Oscar Harding, came to the project from hip-hop production, vinyl collecting and recording-studio engineering. Releases on Invisible, Dispatch and Overview preceded his relationship with Shogun Audio, where tracks such as “Ten Ton” with Flowdan and “Snakes & Villains” with T-Man developed that meeting of bass music and vocal character. His 2023 debut album Perceived Connections brought together collaborators including Strategy, Duskee, Catching Cairo, Visages and Pola & Bryson. Rather than restrict it to drum and bass, he wanted the album to reflect the wider music he listened to. Changes of environment have also shaped his practice: moving from a London studio to a pared-back setup in Berlin renewed his enthusiasm for writing, before his later move to Bristol. Alongside international touring and technically focused DJ sets, he shares production knowledge through Patreon. More recent releases include “North Star / Sludge” on Gemini Gemini.
