Nicky Romero's music connects the expansive melodies of progressive house with the direct impact of festival dance music and pop. The Dutch DJ and producer broke through with Toulouse and his Avicii collaboration I Could Be the One, then carried that studio craft into work with artists including Rihanna and Britney Spears. His career has grown across several connected roles: touring performer, producer, label founder and developer of tools for other musicians.
Protocol Recordings, which he established in 2012, gives those interests a shared home. Alongside releasing music, he has built a wider platform through Protocol Radio, international showcases and the Instigate Studios complex in the Netherlands. That infrastructure makes working with other artists and introducing new producers a substantial part of his activity.
Monocule offers a different perspective on the same musician. Launched in 2020, the alias allows him to pursue deeper, moodier progressive material outside the expectations attached to his main name. His interest in technology is similarly practical and exploratory, extending from the Kickstart production plug-in to performances conceived for livestreaming. Across these different outlets, Romero moves between the scale of a major festival stage and the detailed work of shaping a track in the studio.
