Hiroaki Iizuka

THEM, a record label and event series based in London born from a shared culture of VHS nasties, pirate radio, raves and varied underground electronic music proudly presents THEM001 ‘The Run’. Hiroaki Iizuka is a flagship member of the THEM production crew, who shares the label’s love for Detroit techno, 90’s ghetto house, soundtracks, dark atmospheres and horror. The honour of being the label’s inaugural artist falls to him and he responds with two hardware driven techno experiments crafted using an Akai MPC and analog sequencer. The A-side opens with lead track ‘The Run’ based around hard and stark repetitive hooks that work as a mantra, anchoring down its four to the floor style. Aptly named, ‘The Run' pushes forwards as the track progresses, the hook constantly being re-contextualized by the changing dynamics of Iizuka’s style. The B-side opens with a remix of ‘The Run’ from J.Tijn, who is a regular on Untold’s Pennyroyal imprint. Tijn reworks the track into a driving, raw techno tool that showcases his uncompromisingly dirty and yet carefully balanced production, a sound which is gaining him increasing recognition with each release. Closing the single is ‘Dot’, a six minute plus exploration of a deeper side to Iizuka’s sound, probing the space between dancefloor tools and journeying home listening. Like the ‘The Run’ this track is also a meditation on a central hook, but differs in the way it pushes the hook to the limit through a constant deconstruction and rebuilding of it’s central elements and energy.
