For most producers, Roy Davis Jr. & Peven Everett’s ‘Gabriel’ is the holy grail of untouchable tracks. A bona fide classic and a record that holds a sacred place in the hearts of many, ‘Gabriel’ was an evocative crossover garage anthem that impacted dance music profoundly on its release in 1996, having its roots in garage but with elements of deep house that inspired selectors and remixers across all the dance music genres. It’s a record that not many would dare to mess with, so when Ray Foxx took up the challenge of covering one of his all-time favourite records, he didn’t take it lightly. With meticulous attention to detail, recording brand new trumpet parts from John Thirkwell and carnival-inspired percussion from Shovell, and pinning it together with rolling layered production, this is the ultimate contemporary reinvention. Following hit records like ‘Boom Boom (Heartbeat)’ and ‘La Musica (The Trumpeter)’ Ray Foxx pays respect to the legacy of ‘Gabriel’ wholeheartedly, with an update that’s hard not to love.
